Twin Buttes Klondike Derby

January 24-25, 2025

Check-in/set up camp Friday 24th any time after 2 PM

Location: Blizzard Mountain Ski Hill near Arco

Directions: From Arco drive west on US Highway 93 approximately 15 miles toward Craters of the Moon National Monument. About 2 miles before the Craters entrance, there will be a sign for Blizzard Mountain on the right side of Highway 93 indicating the turnoff.

Cost: $10/participant, payable in advance to the Council or upon check-in. – Fee includes Saturday morning breakfast, prepared by Troop 44 for all youth and adult participants.

Camping: We will be camping in the ski area parking lot, which is somewhat limited. Because every Troop in our district is coming to the Klondike (Hooray!!) we will need to be careful about how much space each troop uses to camp. Please:

  • Minimize the number of vehicles you bring to the Klondike.
  • Due to concerns both about camping in the cold and about space, please group Scouts into fewer larger tents rather than numerous smaller ones.
  • There will be no room to park camp trailers. The ski lodge (a former one-room school) will serve as our warming hut if needed.

Meals: Troops are responsible for their Friday night meal. Breakfast will be provided for all participants on Saturday morning. Each Troop should provide their own meal, sack lunch, or snacks when the Klondike ends at noon on Saturday.

Special instructions:

  1. This is a Leave No Trace Camp. Fires are permitted but must be contained in a fire pan above the ground. Fires must be completely quenched (dead and cold). Carry out any ashes and debris, including partially burned wood.
  2. Participants should be ready for zero-degree weather.
  3. Friday night Campfire Program: Each Troop needs to bring a song, skit, or activity for the program.
  4. Saturday morning each Troop needs a leader to run their station during competitions, as shown on the attached table. All stations except the sled race will run simultaneously and Troops will rotate stations. Please arrange to have the required materials needed for all participants while at your station.
  5. Bring a sled with a tow rope having branched loops for several Scouts to help pull the sled during the race.
